Barbara Farley Swanson, a tireless charitable fund-raiser whose witness of the bombing of Pearl Harbor and its devastating aftermath gave her a sense of resolve and duty to service for a lifetime, died of heart failure Jan. 20 at her home in Piedmont. She was 95. Ms. Swanson graduated from UC Berkeley in 1939. She was born Feb. 26, 1918, in Crescent City, the only child of Grace Ellen and Dr. David Powell Edwards. She married Ross Edward Farley (1947), a Navy commander and had two children – Barbara Suzanne Farley, of Piedmont, and Ross Edward Farley, of Carmel Valley. The couple divorced in 1957. She married Russell Swanson in 1981. He died November 2012 at 91. Barbara has four grandchildren: Taylor Edward Ferris, 25, Barbara Whitney Ferris, 26; Lauren Grace Farley, 31, and Ross Edward III, 30, two step-grandchildren: Brett Wilkes Levine, 24 and Lucas Alexander Levine, 20. Services: Rosary 1/24/14 at 7:30 p.m., St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, in Oakland. Funeral Mass will take place at St Margaret Mary Church 1/25/14 at 11:00 AM. She will be interred at Christ the Light Cathedral.
