Mary Hastings Carpenter

Mrs. Mary Hastings Carpenter, 90, of Casar-Belwood Road, passed away Sunday, Feb. 15, 2009, at her residence.

Born Aug. 21, 1918, in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late Joseph Monroe Hastings and Cora Lee Ramsey Hastings.

She was retired from food services at Broughton Hospital and was a member of Casar United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Carpenter is survived by two sons, Loyde Carpenter and his wife, Winnie, of Hickory and Pete Carpenter and his wife, Shari, of Casar; a sister, Winona Farrens of Lake Helen, Fla.; five grandchildren and spouses, Cindy and Mark Horn, Ronnie Carpenter, Loyde Jr. and Rosie Carpenter, Lynn and Daniel Sullivan and David and Lisa Carpenter; nine great-grandchildren, Luke, Daniel and Emerald Horn, Mandi and Ryan Carpenter, Daniel and Dylan Sullivan, Bennett Carpenter, Wesley Carpenter and David Breeden; three great-great-grandchildren, Caiden Little and Jody and Auburn Breeden; and loving caregivers, Betty Mellon and Susan Wilson.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her stepmother, Lussie Queen Hastings; her husband, D. Loyde "Bill" Carpenter; and seven brothers, Everett, Emerson, Colon, Pearlie, Matt, T.B. and Joe Jr. Hastings.

A funeral service will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Casar United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mary VanDerwerken officiating.

Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends an hour before the service in the Casar United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall. Memorials may be made to Casar United Methodist Church, PO Box 67 Casar, NC 28020.
