Well–Known Lady Resident of Brownsville Answers Death's Call.
On last Saturday morning the silent messenger of Death knocked at the residence of Mrs. T. J. Lockwood, of Brownsville, and called that good and estimable lady to her maker. Mrs. Lockwood was an intelligent lady of charitable disposition and kindly ways that endeared her to the many acquaintances and friends she had made in this and adjoining counties. She arrived in California when but a young girl and with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. B. B. Brown, settled near Chico. Her father became interested in the lumber business and was soon part owner of a mill in the vicinity. In a few years her father died, and, with her mother and brother Byron, she moved to Brownsville to reside with her uncle, the Hon. L. E. Brown, after whom the little mountain town is named.
Up to the time of her marriage to T. J. Lockwood she successfully followed school-teaching. Her marriage took place in 1868. Mr. Lockwood has been employed in Crane Bros.' lumber mills for the past twenty years, during which time he, with his wife and family, have been living in New York Flat. The funeral services and interment took place on last Sunday, Rev. Mr. Hinson officiating at the church and grave. Floral offerings were numerous, and the selections offered by the choir were beautiful. The bereaved husband and family have the heartfelt sympathy of the community in the loss they have sustained.
