Grave marker inscription reads: "Charley Moore, Aged about 60 years, Murdered at Lovney (Mogollon New Mexico), Oct 30, 1888." This cemetery is also known as the W-S Ranch Cemetery. The W-S Ranch was reportedly a hangout for the infamous Butch Cassidy and some members of his gang.∼Charley Moore, or "old Charley", as he was called, was a WS cowboy, who also was interested in mining. It is said he put most of his earnings into mining property which became quite valuable. He was killed by a Mr. Penny of the Penny and Shelton Saloon firm at Cooney, New Mexico in 1888, and is buried in the WS Ranch Cemetery. He was 60 years old at the time of his death. No amount of research has uncovered existence of "Lovney," but now-vanished mining camp of Cooney was nearby. Inscription is almost certain to be "typographical" error, likely due to poor handwriting in "copy" sent along with order for stone.
