George B. Almerigi, prominent citizen of Okmulgee passed away unexpectedly from this life on Monday, October 27, 2008, at 2:20 p.m. at St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He was born on September 30, 1933, to Lawrence Almerigi of Bryant and Pauline Lowe of Schulter. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force and United States Navy where he achieved the rank of Chief Petty Officer. He was a graduate of Long Beach State College with a B.S. Degree in Accounting and Oklahoma City University where he received his Juris Doctorate in 1983. After many years in California, he returned to live and work in Okmulgee. He practiced law before being called to serve in Desert Storm in 1991. He served as General Counsel (Tribal Attorney) from 1984-1986 and Assistant Attorney General for the Muscogee (Creek) Nation from 1992-1995. He later was elected as Second Chief and served in that capacity from 1996-1999. He also served four terms on the Muscogee (Creek) Nation National Council and was currently serving as a Supreme Court Justice of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation since 2006. He was a member of the Many Springs Baptist Church. He served as Worshipful Master of the Okmulgee Masonic Lodge, a 32nd Degree Mason and member of the Bedouin Shrine Temple, Muskogee, Oklahoma. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Richard C. Stephens. He is survived by his wife, Shirley, one daughter, Ione Jeunesse Parkinson, seven grandchildren, Jennifer Hartwell, Angela Lawson, Michael and Ashley Parkinson, Sunny and Hunny Stephens and Abbie Davis, and three great grandchildren, Hailey, Kalei, and Tyler Lawson. He is survived also by his sisters, Sandra Cook of Mt. Ariy, Maryland, Camelia Lovett of Lake Isabella, California, and two brothers, Tom Chalakee of Bakersfield, California and Mike Cook of Long Beach, California. Interment will be at the Tea-Cornell Cemetery, south of Holdenville, Oklahoma. The services will be held on Friday, October 31, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Okmulgee. The Wake Services will be held at McClendon-Winters Funeral Home Chapel, Thursday, October 30, at 7:00 p.m. Dr. Dennis Taylor will be officiating and Second Chief Alfred Berryhill will be assisting.
