Sonny was born and raised in Ponca City and graduated from Ponca City High School. While at high school, Sonny was co-captain of the wrestling team, taking second place in state in 1956-1957,and was awarded a wrestling scholarship to the University of Oklahoma. In 1963, he moved to California and worked for McDonnell Douglas Aerospace as an engineer scientist. In June of 1994, he retired to his ranch in Cookson, Oklahoma. During his retirement, he enjoyed watching his grandchildren grow up, working on his ranch, and traveling to visit family and lifelong friends. Sonny will always be missed for his loving heart and generous, caring ways. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
Sonny preceded in death by his parents, Carroll Joseph Cookson, and Dorothy Jane Cookson,(maiden name)=Lee.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years Darlene Y. Cookson, (maiden name)=Anderson;a son, Jeff Cookson and his wife Cindi Cookson; a daughter Darla Capps and her husband Carl Capps. Grandchildren; Richard Cookson, Rodney Capps, Chad Capps, Kayla Capps, Sean Cookson, Kristen Cookson, and Dylan Cookson; two brothers , Donnie Cookson and Scott Cookson; a sister Sharon Tate. Plus a host of aunts, uncles, neices, and nephews.

Sonny now rest under an Oak Tree on his 360 acre ranch in Cookson Oklahoma.
