The family moved from Ohio to Indiana. After a few years residence in that state, where his father died of the rabies, 18 years after he was bitten by a mad dog. George moved with his mother and family to Jefferson county, Kansas, in 1858, locating near the present site of Rock Creek.

James Piper Sr. married Jane Brunson 9 December 1835 Richland Co, Ohio
Jane was born 28 Sep 1818 in Ohio and died 06 Aug 1863 in Jefferson Co, Kansas. Jane was 44 years, 10 months, and 8 days at the time of her death.
James and Jane had 12 children including 2 sets of twins.
