James "Papa June" Bessie, a retired farm laborer, died at 4:15 a.m. Monday, July 21, 2003, at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center, Baton Rouge. He was 84 and a lifelong resident of Port Allen.
Visiting at New Poplar Grove Baptist Church, Port Allen, until religious service, conducted by Dr. S.H. Freeman, pastor. Interment in Lady of Knight Cemetery.Carney-Mackey Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Survived by his wife, Carrie Bessie, Port Allen; a son, three step-daughters and two brothers.
