Dena graduated from East Buchanan High School in Gower, MO; MO Western State College in St Joseph, MO with a BS in Education; and received her Masters of Ed from Northwest MO State University in Maryville, MO. She taught French and Spanish, first at Benton High School in St. Joseph, MO, then in the Kansas City MO School District, Park Hill School District, Blue Valley School District, and ended her career back in St. Joseph at Lafayette High School. She was also the Coordinator of Foreign Languages for the St. Joseph School District. Dena was a member of numerous professional education organizations, and a well-known speaker at foreign language conferences and events. Most of all she was a giving and loving daughter, sister, aunt, teacher, and friend. Dena loved life and lived it to the fullest. She was an accomplished pianist, a lover of the arts, and a world traveler. She took many student groups to Mexico and Europe to experience the cultures they learned about in her classes. A scholarship in her name was established by her family and is given each spring to a worthy Lafayette High School senior.
Dena was a Christian and spent her growing up years as an active member of Hemple Community Church. Her funeral service was held on Tuesday, May 11 at Wyatt Park Baptist Church in St. Joseph, MO. Interment was at Kerns-Freeman Cemetery in Hemple, MO.
