John William Donovan, 79, died at at 8:05 p.m. Tuesday, July 8, 2008, at his home in Hillsboro.

Mr. Donovan was born June 21, 1929 in Hillsboro, the son of the late Harold Olin and Edna Snyder Donovan. Mr. Donovan was a retired industrial arts teacher with the Southeast Fountain School District. He was a member of the Indiana State Teachers Association, Indiana Retired Teachers Association, the National Education Association, and the Indianapolis chapter of the American Legion. He was also a charter member of the Sky Valley Golf Course.

Mr. Donovan graduated from Hillsboro High School and received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from Indiana State Teachers College. After high school he spent four years with the western fleet of the United States Navy, serving three and a half years in Japan during the Korean War. He taught at Wallace High School from 1958 to 1964, Veedersburg High School from 1964 to 1965, and Fountain Central High School from 1965 until his retirement in 1991. Mr. Donovan coached varsity basketball at Wallace and golf at Fountain Central.

A lifelong resident of Hillsboro, Mr. Donovan was known for his love of golf and woodworking. He exhibited his hand-crafted and hand-painted wind mobiles at a number of craft shows across the state, and built the home he and his family lived in for the last 40 years.

On Nov. 22, 1956, Mr. Donovan married Nancy Ann Tipsword of Decatur, Ill. She survives.

Also surviving are two sons, John Michael Donovan, Des Moines, Iowa; Eric William (Jill Vining) Donovan, Kirkwood, Mo.; a former daughter-in-law, Dorothy Grandon, West Des Moines, Iowa; four grandchildren, Caitlin, Delaney, Liam and Keegan Donovan; a great-granddaughter, Jade Simone Duncan; his sister, Norma Jean Gustus, Attica. He was preceded in death by a brother, Harold Lee and a sister, Betty Brown.
