Married Anne Perley Freeman on 27 Nov 1873; they had 12 children together, 2 of which died in infancy. In about 1892 he became interested in the then new hobby of photography, starting with a plate camera which took 6 stamp size pictures on a single plate. He studied photography avidly whenever he could find a book or magazine article dealing with it. Many of Gilbert's photographs are still on display in Liverpool, Canada. Collections include glass plates and a photo album on display in the Liverpool Museum.
