Following graduation he enlisted in the Army during World War II. When he was honorably discharged from the military he returned home, married Thelma L. Gurney and lived in East Freetown, Massachusett. Merrill retired in 1988 as a plant manager from Stillwater Associates after 33 years of dedicated service. He enjoyed fishing and whittling.
Merrill is survived by his wife Thelma Snell, a daughter Jane Darling and her husband Bill, two grandsons Ryan Darling and his wife Jen, and Michael Darling.
