Charles Kenneth Quisenberry, 92, of Columbia passed away Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2010, at Stuart House Nursing Home in Centralia.
Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 18, at Parker Funeral Service. Services will follow at 11 a.m. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery following the service.
Charles was born May 21, 1918, to Charles C. and Ruth Kemper Quisenberry.
Charles graduated from Hallsville High School in 1936 and attended barber college in Kansas City.
After graduation, he returned to Columbia, where he barbered until 2005 with the exception of the time he spent in the Navy during World War II. Most of those years, he barbered at his own shop — Charles Barber Shop.
Charles was second class seaman, going to boot camp in Farragut, Idaho. He returned to Farragut and attended electrical school. From there, he was sent to Treasure Island, Calif., where he attended Gyro Compass School. He was then assigned to a transport ship, USS St. Marys, at San Pedro, Calif. They carried soldiers to a number of islands; the one he talked most about was the invasion of Okinawa. From there, they went for a load of soldiers preparing for the invasion of Japan. They were docked in the harbor near the USS Missouri during the signing of the Japanese surrender during World War II.
Charles is survived by his wife of 70 years, Betty Johnson Quisenberry; a daughter, Bethel DeSpain and husband John DeSpain; a son, Mark Quisenberry and wife Tara Quisenberry; a grandson, Joseph Quisenberry; a brother, S.D. Quisenberry and a sister, Norma Stroupe.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters; and one brother.
Donations can be made to Prairie Grove Baptist Church, where he was a member for 53 years, or Lighthouse Community Church.
