Robert E. Andrews, Abingdon Chapel
88, formerly of 909 W. Monmouth St., Abingdon, Ill. died at 7:20 a.m. Sunday May 2, 2010 in the Care Center of Abingdon.
He was born September 22, 1921 in Abingdon the son of Fred and Esther Krohn Andrews. He married Edith Griffith on June 7, 1941 in Palmyra, Mo. She survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Robert Lee (Sherry) Andrews of Galesburg and Craig Alan (Joann) Andrews of Abingdon, four grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.
He served in the US Army as a member of the 35th Infantry Division for 4 years, serving in Germany during Worl War II. He was awarded five battle stars.
He worked as a laborer for OMC Gale Products for 30 years. He attended Abingdon High School. Robert was a member of the Abingdon American Legion and the Abingdon Pottery Club. He also was a member and a deacon of the Abingdon Christian Church. Robert volunteered as a driver for the Senior Citizens Van.
Funeral services are scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Wednesday May 5, 2010 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel. The Rev. Darryl McDaniel, Rev. Gerald Hill, Rev. Melody Andrews and Mrs. Eleanor Landon will officiate. Visitation will be 5:00-7:00 p.m. Tuesday May 4, 2010 at the chapel. Burial will be in Abingdon Cemetery with Military Rites by the Abingdon American Legion. Memorials may be made to Abingdon Christian Church or to Hospice Compassus.
