State of Tennessee, County of Wayne
In the matter of Nancy Jane Varnell nee Franks whom I am informed is an
applicant for a pension War, 861-5.
Personally came before me a acting Justice of the peace in and for
aforesaid County and State, Christopher C. Roller citizen of the County
of Wayne, State of TN, reputable and entitled to credit, and who, bein
duly sworn, declare in relation to aforesaid case as follows: That he is
(58 years years of age, and resides at Martins Mills) that was marked
through. That he had so resided for 14 years, has known her personally
for about 15 years. That he was also personally acquainted with her
former and late husband William Franks. he states that he was captured
in Wayne or Hardin County Tennessee (being on or near the line between
the two counties) on the 27th day of May 1864, that at that time he was
a discharged soldier. That on the same day the same command of Rebel
also captured the said William Franks in the same neighborhood. That he
and said Wm. Franks were taken together to Andersonville Georgia and
there put in prison together and remained there together about three
months. That the said William Frank was taken sick in that prison and
became very bad off and was taken out of prison to the Rebel Hospital
connected with the prison. That he helped to take said William Franks to
the Hospital and went with him as far as the prison gate and he has
never seen or heard of him since that time. That said Franks was then
dangerously sick and he is perfectly satisfied that he died in that
Hospital within a short time after he was taken there.
Witness states that he and said Franks were put in Andersonville Prison
about the 27th day of June 1864. He states that he resides in Wayne
County Tennessee and his address is at Martin's Mill Wayne County
Tennessee and that he is about 58 years of age. That he was formerly a
private in Co
. B 1st Ala Cavalry Regt.
He further declares that he has no interest in said case, and is not
concerned in its prosecution, and is not related to said applicant.
