Daniel was the son of Daniel Shumate II and Sarah Ann James. He married Millicent CALLISON, they had 12 children.

John Shumate 1780 -1840 is the 12th Child

Daniel and wife Milly had moved by 1755 into Bedford Co., Va., into that portion north of Blackwater River that was included in Franklin Co. in 1785. They moved about 1780 to what is now the town of Rich Creek, Giles, Va., geographically at the mouth of Rich Creek stream and New River. The Rich Creek residence location was placed from 1780 to 1799 in Greenbrier Co., from 1799 to 1829 in Monroe Co., Va. (both Greenbrier and Monroe then being in Virginia), and in 1829 in Giles Co., now Virginia. To add further complexity to location changes prior to 1819, the post-1780 residence was also found temporarily prior to 1829 in Montgomery Co. and Giles Co. These complex boundary changes have encouraged the birth places of the last 9 children, along with other location referenced to the homesite, to be shown as "Rich Creek, now Giles, Va."
