Birth: Feb. 7, 1885
Grundy County
Missouri, USA
Death: Apr. 12, 1955

Albert H. Barnes was the oldest of 9 children of William Burnis Barnes (1864-1912), born in Missouri, and Eva Barbara (Dowell) Barnes (1865-1915), born in Meade County, Kentucky. Albert may have been named after his mother's oldest brother, Albert McKay Dowell (1859-1945). William B. and Eva B. Barnes are buried at Sodville Cemetery, also known as Kingsdown Cemetery, in Ford County, Kansas, on property that they had donated for the cemetery.

It is interesting how names are handed down, but their spelling and origin can be lost after a generation or two. The middle name of Albert Barnes was spelled as Hix in family notes written by his aunt Mollie (Barnes) Gauld (1875-1968). Albert's grandfather was Elijah Hicks Barnes (1845-1933), who is shown in different records as E. H., Hick and Hicks. The origin of this name certainly appears to be the Rev. George H. Hicks (1814-1873) a Baptist minister who performed the marriage of Elijah Hicks Barnes and wife Sophia S. Hayden in 1864 and was the minister at their Hill Grove Baptist Church located in rural Meade County, Kentucky for 30 years. Elijah and Sophia named one of their sons, born in 1870, George. Rev. George H. Hicks was a locally famous and popular minister in Meade, Hardin, and Nelson Counties, Kentucky. Over his career, Rev. Hicks was the minister of 21 different churches, a one point 6 at the same time. He Baptized more than 1,500 people and married 250 couples. Amazingly, Rev. George Hicks performed the funeral for Elijah Barnes in Nelson County, Kentucky in 1845, the grandfather of Elijah Hicks Barnes (1845-1933).

When the First Presbyterian Church of Kingsdown, Ford County, Kansas was organized on July 30, 1905, Albert Barnes and his parents are listed among the 16 charter members.

Albert H. Barnes of Kingsdown, Kansas, age 25, and Myrtle Bingham, Wichita, Kansas, age 19, applied for a marriage license in Sedgwick County, Kansas on June 10, 1910 (#N181).
