Rueben was born in Hendricks, the son of Hans and Jennie Hansen. He served in WWI in France and was killed during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive of World War I. He is buried at the Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery and Memorial in France. The Meuse-Argonne offensive was probably the bloodiest single battle in U.S. history, in the sense that it had the largest number of U.S. dead in a single battle. The Meuse-Argonne offensive cost the US 117,000 casualties, France 70,000 and Germany 100,000. The American casualties represented 40% of the US casualites in WWI.
The objective was the capture of the rail station hub at Sedan, France in order to break the rail network supporting the German army in France and Flanders.
