A son of James Henry and Rachel Amanda (Jackson) Baughman of Everett, PA. He was united in marriage with Mary Uretta (Foster) Baughman of Licking County, Ohio, on August 27, 1913.

Obituary from the Madison, SD, newspaper September 14, 1959, purchased from the Karl E. Mundt Library, Dakota State University, Madison, SD, September 2012.

Dr. Baughman, 72, died unexpectedly at his home ending 40 years of medical and civic service to the Madison, South Dakota community.

He was a leader in the medical profession in Madison and South Dakota and his ability was recognized nationally through his membership in professional organizations.

His major part in building and management of the present Madison Community hospital and his generous contributions to the proposed new hospital, together with his activities in other civic organizations, won him the respect and admiration of thousands of patients and friends.

Dr. Baughman received his BS degree in 1907 and the Graduate Pharmacist degree in 1909 from Valparaiso University, Indiana. He studied two years of medicine at Valparaiso University while serving as assistant instructor in anatomy, bacteriology and pathology. He taught these subjects again at Chicago College of Medicine and Surgery, now the medical department of Loyola university where he received his medical degree in 1911. He worked in the Cook county hospital in Chicago from 1911 to 1913.

In 1913 he received a commission in the Marine hospital service with the U. S. Public Health Service. He worked in Marine Hospitals in Chicago, Seattle, and San Francisco during World War I.

After the war in 1919 Dr. Baughman entered private practice in medicine in Madison, South Dakota, in association with Dr. Robert Spencer Westaby. Dr. Westaby wanted Dr. Baughman to stay in Madison because he thought the city needed a surgeon. Together they were instrumental in establishing the Madison, SD, 75-bed hospital.

In December, 1958, Dr. and Mrs. Baughman presented a gift of land for a newer hospital structure. They also contributed funds to equip a delivery room as a memorial to their eldest son, Daniel, a Navy Lieutenant Commander who was lost at sea with his submarine, the Swordfish, during World War II in January, 1945.

Dr. Baughman was past president of the Madison District Medical society, the South Dakota Valley Medical association. He was a member of the American Medical association, the American College of Surgeons, the American Academy of General Practice, the American Association of Railway Surgeons, the Association of Military Surgeons, and Medical Veterans of the World War. He was active for many years in the work of the South Dakota Tuberculosis and Health Association and the American Public Health association and was Lake county health officer at the time of his death.

He also held memberships in Phi Chi medical fraternity, B. P. O. E., Kiwanis Club, American Legion and Izaak Walton League.

His children were Shirley Foster, Daniel Sparks, Jr., Richard Curtis, Thomas Patrick, Mary Lou, and Nancy Jane Baughman.

Nancy Jane married Dr. Harold Dean (Ike) Phelps, M.D., Aug. 13, 1950, in Minnesota. He passed away Sept. 18, 2013, at Avalon Care Center in Pullman, Washington. Find A Grave Memorial# 5505997
