John Reilly served as a Private in Company B of the 145th New York Volunteer Infantry in the American Civil War.

He was wounded in his left thigh on July 2, 1863 in the heavy fighting on and around Culp's Hill during the Battle of Gettysburg.

His leg was later amputated, and he died on July 29 at Letterman General Hospital.

He was initially buried the next day in Section 1, Grave #2 of that hospital's cemetery.

He had resided in New York City.

He enlisted in the Army on August 18, 1862 at New York City.

He was 19 years of age at the time of his enlistment, and he was listed as being single.

The New York State Adjutant General's Office records also state that he served as a drummer during his service.

Note: John was 19 when he enlisted at NYC on 8/18/1862. He was mustered in on 9/11/1862. He was severely wounded in the right thigh at Gettysburg, Pa., on 7/2/1864. The leg was later amputated and the Pvt. died at Letterman hosp. Promotion: drummer
