Mike Berger, our wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 27, 2014, following a courageous battle with diabetes. He was the son of C.E. and Delora Bosen Berger, born and raised in Murray, Utah. On June 27, 1960 he married his high school/neighborhood sweetheart, Sharon Mac Neil. They were sealed in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.
Mike was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who loved his Heavenly Father and Savior, Jesus Christ. He served tirelessly in many ward and stake callings including: Bishopric, High Priest group leadership, Priesthood, Sunday School and Primary teacher, and was involved concurrently in various capacities of Scouting for over 54 years. He received many Scouting awards, including the Silver Beaver. He loved shaping the youth into great young men. He was a dedicated psychologist, counseling ADD/ADHD children and their families for many years at Weber Mental Health and in private practice.
He was proud to serve our country in the Army during the Berlin Crisis. He had great respect for the Armed Forces and the United States flag, the symbol of our freedom.
Mike received degrees from the University of Utah, Brigham Young University, and completed his PhD at Utah State University. He taught as an adjunct professor at Utah State and Weber State Universities. He had an incredible mind and memory and could intelligently discuss and explain any subject, yet he continued to seek additional knowledge. He is well known for his virtually limitless talents and abilities He wrote and published many books, articles and poems. He loved sports; participating, watching, coaching and refereeing. He coached little league football for many years. He knew standings and stats of all college and professional teams. Mike also enjoyed music, art, and sculpturing, but most of all, he loved his wife and family. Messages left for his wife always ended with IAMAPILWY! (I am madly and passionately in love with you!) He is best known for his great sense of humor. Even as his health declined, he always had a joke, humorous story, or creative poem to share with everyone he met. His self-introduction to someone new was often, “There are four things you need to know about me: I’m bright, articulate, handsome, and very humble.”
Mike is survived by his sweetheart, Sharon and their seven children, Joni Berger-Rose (Kris), Brian Berger, Vic Berger (Tina), Randi Lehman (Travis), Misti Shupe (Tim), Bradi Mills (Shawn), and Shay Berger (Lindsay); 20 grandchildren two great-granddaughters, and his three brothers, Buck, Blaine (Elaine), and Butch (Pat). He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Dennis. Mike will be deeply missed by his family, many friends and youth whose lives he touched, brightened, and changed. Mike, we love you dearly!
