Betty Florene Hayes, 86, of Charlottesville, departed this life to be with the Lord on Friday, July 3, 2009, at home with her husband by her side.
She was born November 3, 1922, in Louisa County, a daughter of the late Charles and Pearl Lena Stewart.
She was a very active member and First Lady of the Charlottesville Church of Christ International Bible Way Church World Wide which was founded by her husband in 1965. She worked right by his side establishing clubs, working with the Women's Ministry, teaching and picking up children for Sunday School Classes, traveling across the state as a Missionary for the Virginia Diocese. She also was active with the Bible Way Church Clergy Wives and Missionary Departments. She was recently honored for 44 years of service to the church.
Her hobbies included cooking, sewing, and always planning events for the church. She loved doing things to make other people happy.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by five brothers, Leonard, William, Johnny, Eugene and Oather Stewart; three sisters, Kathleen Webster, Nora Jones and Nannie Wright; and three sons, Joseph King, Charles W. Hayes Sr. and Harry B. King.
She leaves to cherish her memory her husband, Bishop Rufus Hayes; two sons, Russell King, and Rufus Hayes Jr., three daughters, Eleanor Alston, Shirley Cook, and Diane Hayes, one brother, Russell Stewart, two sisters, Priscilla Bryant, and Pearl Lena Thurston, 27 grandchildren, 25 great- grandchildren, a special niece, Lillian Jackson, and a host of great- great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 14, 2009, at Charlottesville Church of Christ, 990 Fifth Street, Southwest. Apostle Lawrence G. Campbell officiated.
