Huriah was uncertain of his exact birthdate because his parents died when he was young. He said in his testimony when he applied for his military pension that an older sister told him she believed it was in the year 1749. After his parents were lost, he was raised by a cousin and his wife, John and Jane (Heard) Gilmore.

Huriah served as a Private in the Virginia Line during the Revolutionary War. He enlisted and served three different times, and in 1832 he was awarded a pension.

Huriah was married to Harriet Wiley about 1784. Information about where and when Harriet died or where she is buried hasn't been found yet. These children are mention in his will: Henry, who first married Mary McDaniel and after her death Caroline Jouett; Margaret, wife of John Copeland; Temperance, whose married name was Spicer; Sarah; and Seburn, husband of Celia Dean.
