Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. He served as a Private in Company K, 11th Iowa Infantry, Union Army. During actions with Confederates at Kenesaw Mountain, Georgia, June 15, 1864, a fellow solider had fallen between the battle lines. Private Mayes with one companion, under heavy enemy fire at short range went to the rescue of a wounded comrade and carried him to a place of safety. For bravery in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Medal of Honor on November 27, 1899. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
