John was born on 9 October 1847 in Mississippi. He was the son of James Anderson Savage and Jane Caroline Bagwell. He married Charlotte Angeline Bufkin in Oktebheha, Mississippi, on 8 July 1866. John died on 19 April 1916 at age 68. His body was interred in Winston county Mississippi in Bethel cemetery.
