Juliet Calhoun Blakeley was known as the "Mother of Albion Methodism," being the only person who held continuous membership in the Albion Methodist Episcopal Church since its inception in 1837, the year she came to Albion with her husband Alphonzo. A local legend naming her "The Original Mother of Mother's Day" developed after she rallied the mothers of the congregation to support the "red ribbon" temperance movement after two boys were purposely made to imbibe by the anti-temperants in town. Juliet's sons were so impressed that according to this legend they encouraged people to honor their mothers on the second Sunday in May each year, which was their mother's birthday at the time of the aformentioned event. A State of Michigan historical marker has been placed across the street from where the church once stood in Albion commemorating Mother's Day and Juliet's local tie. Juliet boarded the first female students when Albion Seminary was opened. Their home also served as an Underground Railroad stop in the years preceding the Civil War.
Parents: James & Mary "Patte" (Perry) Calhoun. Spouse: Alphonzo Blakeley m. January 28, 1837 Williamson, Wayne County, N.Y.
