Birth: Apr. 28, 1891
Madison County
Alabama, USA
Death: Jan. 6, 1969
Anderson County
Texas, USA

John Birrel Bernard was my paternal grandfather, known affectionately as Daddy Birrel to his 4 grandchildren, Mike, Paula, Donna and Vickie.

Birrel was the 3rd of 5 children born to John Porter and Willie Mae Brown. He was born in Madison County, Alabama on April 28, 1891. His mother died about 1900, approximately 2 years after her last child was born. Her death and burial were probably in the community of Handley Village, now a part of Fort Worth, Tarrant County, Texas.

He married Maude Salome Gray on Valentine's Day 1915 in Blackfoot, Anderson County, Texas. Their 3 children were Nadine, J.B., and Dixie.

Birrel was a respected building contractor in the Palestine, Texas area for many years. Many of his friends in the business called him Pine Knot. I wish I knew the origin of that endearing name. He was a charter member of the Crockett Road Church of Christ and played a key role in constructing the building.

Born April 28, 1891 in Huntsville, Alabama, Mr. Bernard was the son of the late John Bernard and Mrs. Willie Brown Bernard. A retired carpenter-contractor, he moved to Anderson County from Huntsville, Alabama in 1915. He was a charter member of the Crockett Road Church of Christ.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Maude Salome Gray Bernard of Palestine; a son, J. B. Bernard, Jr. of Palestine; two daughters, Mrs. Willie Nadine Boatwright of Palestine and Mrs. Ken (Dixie Jean) Copeland of Morgan City, Louisiana; a brother, Dewey Jesse Bernard of Palestine; a sister, Mrs. Lonie Bradford of Houston; four grandchildren, Michael Gene Bernard, Paula Elaine Bernard, Donna Diane Boatwright and Vickie Diane Copeland; and two great-grandchildren, Kelly Beth Bernard and Kathryn Elaine Trigg.
