"When a police officer is killed, it's not an agency that loses an officer, it's an entire nation." -Chris Cosgriff, ODMP Founder

Sgt. Hector Heberto Barrera, University of Texas at San Antonio Police Department, born July 22, 1980 in McAllen, Texas entered eternal rest on Tuesday, August 20, 2013.

He was known as a family man, a loving husband, father, brother, and friend. Hector loved and adored his wife Liza and always cherished his sisters.

He was a hardworking, professional law enforcement officer who dedicated 11 years to the University of Texas at San Antonio Police Department, Zapata County and Starr County as a Deputy Sheriff.

He was counted by his department and those on his second shift as a caring, fair, and compassionate Leader.

SAN ANTONIO -- The University of Texas at San Antonio community is mourning the death of a police officer who was killed while off-duty.

Sgt. Hector Barrera, 33, was traveling northbound on FM 1560 near Shaenfield Road when a southbound Jeep driven by a 65-year-old man turned in front of him and the motorcycle hit the Jeep's rear passenger door. Barrera died on the scene from his injuries, according to the Bexar County Sheriff's Office.

"We are all deeply saddened by the loss of Sgt. Barrera," said UTSA President Ricardo Romo said in a statement. "His 11-year career, including seven years with the UTSA Police Department, was marked by exemplary service, professionalism and dedication.

He was a great friend to the UTSA community. Our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones during this difficult time." Investigators did not know what caused Barrera to lose control.

Barrera was commissioned as a police officer in June 2003 after graduating from the UT System Police Academy. He had been a sergeant for almost a year.

The officer also had served with the Zapata County Sheriff's Office and the Starr County Sheriff's Office, UTSA said.
