"Tim" was the son of George Ray and Viola Katherine Duvall Bawden born in Davenport, Scott, IA. He grew up at 161 Forest Road, the home his father built for Vi before they were married, at the time not in the city limits.
His entrepreneural skills developed thru the publication of a neighborhood newsletter that he printed, distributed and sold for over four years from 1942-46.
He graduated from Davenport (Central) High School in 1947 and from St. Ambrose College in Davenport in 1950, and a Masters degree in journalism from Northwestern University, Evanston, IL in 1952. He was drafted into the Army where he served 2 years as a Sgt at Ft. Bliss, El Paso, TX. When his father died in April 1954, Tim returned home to enter the family printing business, Bawden Bros, Inc. @ 121 E. 3rd St. with uncle Harry and brother "Binc".
Tim had a life-long interest in Boy Scouts of America, beginning in grade school when he joined McKinley School Troop 4 under the leadership of Dr. Carl H. Matthey. He became troop leader during his St. Ambrose years, began a scout troop in El Paso, and upon his return to Davenport in 1954, he became leader of Troop 4 at McKinley. Through the years he was leader of Explorer Post 4 at McKinley, Post 7 at First Presbyterian and Troop 24 and Explorer Post 24 at Riverdale School in Riverdale, Scott, IA. Over 100 boys earned their Eagle Scout Award under Tim's leadership.
He served for 25 years on the Boy Scout Council and as a member of the National Boy Scout Committee as chairman of the National Boy Scout Advancement Committee. He received 2 of the highest awards the Boy Scouts can bestow: Silver Beaver for outstanding local service, and Silver Antelope for exceptional effort at the regional level. Tim served as an elder and deacon at First Presbyterian Church, chosen outstanding-young-man-of-the-year by the Junior Chamber of Commerce, president of the Outing Club, and was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Davenport.
Joyce Edith Garber, dtr of Chester Christopher and Mabel Ione Chambers Garber, married Tim on 19 Aug 1961 in the Randolph, IA Presbyterian Church. Joyce was born 7 May 1935 on the family farm near the former village of Anderson, Fremont County, Iowa. The Chambers family came to Walnut Creek Twnshp, Fremont, IA from Pennsylvania in 1856.
Joyce graduated from Randolph High School and from the University of Iowa in Iowa City in May 1957 with a degree in music education. She taught at Los Alamos, NM; Tabor, IA's Fremont-Mills HS and Davenport's J.B. Young Junior High School (gr 7-9). She married Dick Karwath after Tim's death.
Joyce was a leader in many educational and cultural organizations: president of Junior Symphony (Quad City Symphony Orchestra), president of PEO Chapter LM, president of Pleasant Valley (Scott, IA) School Board,sang in the choir of Davenport's First Presbyterian Church for 20 yrs and served on University of Iowa Women's Athletics Advisory Board.
The family were active members of First Presbyterian Church. Tim died in Davenport's St. Luke's Hospital.
They had 3 children still living (2008): Michael Thomas, Peter Chambers, and Cindy Eldridge.
