Born the 6th of 7 children to Stephen and Mary Terrill Bawden, native to Redruth, Cornwall, England. Their next move would be to Rockingham Twnsp, Scott County, IA where coal mining was in tremendous force in 1860 because of trains and factories. That year, 60,000 TONS of coal came from local mines and that number would quadruple in 10 years.
George attended Davenport public schools and graduated from the University of Iowa Law School in 1880. After the death of his father in 1881, George and mother Mary moved to Davenport to live with George's sister Mary Iles at 614 E. 13th St.
He joined the law firm of Judge Grant and later C. A. Ficke for 2 yrs.
He married almost 20yo Jennie Eldridge, dtr of Jacob Mullen and Mary High Williams Eldridge in her family home at 1530 Farnam on the sw corner of Kirkwood Blvd [still stands]on 14 Mar 1885. Jennie was born 15 Jul 1865 on the Jersey Ridge Rd. fruit farm. At the time this was 3 mi outside the city of Davenport. They eventually moved into town to facilitate the 9 children's education and because the economics of farming had changed the family's welfare. Jennie and George were given land on Kirkwood Blvd as a wedding present after their marriage and life in Muscatine, Muscatine, IA where George was a lawyer with Allen Broomhall. In 1886 he became vp of the Iowa Mortgage Co...uncle JB Phelps was president.
In 1895 George formed a partnership with Julius Lischer joined by nephew Stephen Phelps Bawden. In 1901 Fred W. Neal joined the firm which dissolved in 1902 on Lischer's death. He next formed the firm of Bawden and Thuenen. Henry Thuenen became junior partner.
George was an active member of the Republican Party and prominent in Davenport politics. He was elected to 2 terms as 5th Ward Alderman (declined a 3rd term as well as nomination for mayor). He was vp and counsel for the Iowa and Illinois RR at the time of the building of the interurban line btw Davenport and Clinton. In 1902 he became stockholder and president of the Times Corp which published the Daily Times newspaper under teh direction of E.P. (Phil) Adler. George was Chencellor Commander of the Knights of Pythias and a member of the Davenport Turner Society.
He suffered from diabetes. In the Spring of 1905, he went to Excelsior Spgs, Lafayette, MO to regain health...his friends thinking it was a lost cause. He died there at age 46. Jennie and the 3 sons: AR (Albert Ralph), George Ray "Ray" and Harry Eldridge lived on Kirkwood until 1911. They later lived at 1203 E. 2nd Ave (9th St.) with Jennie' sister-in-law widowed Edna Bawden (Stephen Douglas), originally Nathan M. Rambo's home. Jennie lived there until 1928.
Jennie died 1 Apr 1959 in the Davenport home of her d-i-l "AR" wife, "Tess" Bawden (Margaret Theresa Hart Bawden) at 29 Edgehill Terr. Jennie was a member of First Presbyterian Church, serving 2 terms as Ladies Society president.
