Civil War Union Major General. He was born at Flemingsburg, Kentucky, but later moved with his family to Indiana. In 1837 he entered Wabash College and furthered his education there until he was able to secure an appointment to the United States Military Academy. Later, he would graduate 10th in the class of 1843, which included his close friend Ulysses S. Grant. After service in the 4th United States Artillery in Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Texas, he was an instructor at West Point from 1846 to 1855. Enjoying the classroom, he resigned his First Lieutenant's commission in 1857 and from then until 1860 was professor of mechanics and engineering at Washington University, in St. Louis, Missouri. When hostilities began in spring 1861, he became commander of an Indiana militia regiment. His military background resulted in his appointment as Brigadier General of Volunteers and an assignment to command a brigade in northwestern Virginia. In September he repulsed a Confederate incursion near Cheat Mountain, securing that portion of the state for the Union. On his brother's death, he again resigned his commission and in January 1862 returned to Indiana to oversee the family's grocery business. In his free time he helped organize state units. In August he reentered the volunteer service as Colonel of the 75th Indiana Infantry and a month later was recommissioned Brigadier General. On November 29 he rose to Major General, at which rank he supervised a division in the XIV Corps, Army of the Cumberland at Hoover's Gap, on June 24, 1863, and at Chickamauga. He then became army chief of staff, serving Major General George H. Thomas throughout the Siege of Chattanooga. In January 1864 he was sent to command the defenses of New Orleans. Six months later he took charge of the XIX Corps, Army of the Gulf and help Major General E.R.S. Canby organize the expedition that captured Mobile, Alabama, the following spring. At the end of the war, he commanded along the Mississippi from Memphis to the river's mouth. During Reconstruction, he headed the Department of Arkansas, then commanded occupation forces in Texas and Louisiana and frontier units in Nebraska and Wyoming. For a brief period in 1871 he was a United States Senator from Texas, losing his seat when the election was contested. His tenure as Colonel of the 3rd Cavalry ended with his resignation on June 25, 1877, following a court martial inquiry into his conduct during the Powder River campaigning against the Sioux. He spent his retirement years in Washington D.C., where later he would die. (bio by: Ugaalltheway)
