Forestport Veteran Buried With Honors
Forestport - Funeral services for James Miller, Forestport's oldest resident and last Civil War veteran, who died at his home here July 4, 1939, were held Sunday at his home with the Rev. Frederick Myers, rector of Christ Church officiating.
Five grandsons and one great grandson served as bearers. They were Theodore Rapp, Donald Rapp, Ernest Lanz, Carl Lanz, Stanley Lent and Walter Cronin.
Boonville Love Post 405 attended the funeral in body and acted as an escort.
Burial was in Beechwood Cemetery, where representatives of Skillen Post 47, GAR, Rome conducted ritual services. The firing squad from Love Post fired the final salute over the grave. Utica Daily Press, July 12, 1939
