Judith Johnson, St. Joseph, Missouri, died April 18, 2011, after a seven year battle with Leukemia.
She graduated from Central High School and from the University of Kansas, earning a bachelor's and master's degree in nursing.
She taught nursing at Missouri Methodist School of Nursing and Missouri Western State University. She was also a staff nurse at Heartland for over 30 years.
She had been a missionary to Indonesia. She participated in many medical mission trips to Central Mexico, Poland, and Venezuela. She had been an active member and served as a teacher and volunteer at Riverside Church and later at Grace Evangelical Church, as well as volunteering at the Patee Hall Clinic.
She was preceded in death by her father, Robert Ray.
Survivors are her mother, Nell (Hodgden) Ray; husband, Robert; son, Eric (Kim) Nelson, of Sandy, Utah; daughters,Amy (Craig) Willeke, of Lincoln, NE; Tammy (Joe) Carr, and Robyn (Chris) Stephens of St. Joseph, MO; sons, Steve Johnson and Patrick Johnson, of St. Joseph, MO; 20 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two aunts; and many cousins.
She loved being in God's beautiful natural settings, gardening (she was a Master Gardener), spending time with family, praying for family, friends and acquaintances, bird watching, and cooking.
It was her greatest prayer that everyone in her family, friends, and those she met, could have the joy, peace, and contentment offered to all who receive Jesus Christ as their savior. Two favorite scriptures were: "Don't worry about anything. Instead pray about everything. Tell God what you need and thank Him for all He has done. If you do this, you will experience God's peace, which is more wonderful than the human mind can understand. His peace will guard your heart and mind as you live in Christ Jesus." Phil. 4: 6-7; and "Look, here. I stand at the door and knock. If you hear me calling and open the door, I will come in and we will share a meal as friends." Rev. 3:20.
She wanted others to rejoice for her and be at peace as she left this world. "For we know that when this earthly tent that we live in is torn down, when we die and leave these bodies, we will have a home in heaven, an eternal body made for us by God." II Cor. 5:1.
Judy donated her body to the University of Kansas. Until she became ill with Leukemia, she had been a frequent blood donor. She was a Who's Who, and had received the Most Valuable Person Award at Heartland Hospital.
A memorial service will be held at Grace Evangelical Church Saturday, April 23, 2011; Pastor Darrel Jones officiating.
