WINDSOR - Johnnie Bruce Hughes , 80, of the 300 block of Cale St., died Feb. 14, 2001, in Bertie Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Bertie County on March 6, 1920, to the late Charles Craton and Rachel Hoggard Hughes . Mr. Hughes was a retired plumber and a member of Riverside Baptist Church. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and received the Purple Heart. He was a member of the Veteran's Club and the American Legion.
Survivors include his wife, Viola Parker Hughes ; his daughter, Lisa Hughes White; sons, Bruce Edward Hughes and Charles Michael Hughes , all of Windsor; sisters, Annie Ruth H. Stokley and Irene H. Layton, both of Edenton; and three grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in Ahoskie City Cemetery by the Rev. J.N. Baggett. Military rites will be observed. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Walker Funeral Home. Memorial gifts may be made to the Bertie County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 74, Windsor, NC 27983.
