Riley, a resident of Hull, Massachusetts, was found dead in her home after prolonged exposure to various medications. The medical examiner's office determined the girl died from "intoxication due to the combined effects" of the drugs Clonidine, Depakote, Dextromethorphan, and Chlorpheniramine, allegedly administered by her parents, and that her heart and lungs were damaged due to prolonged abuse of these prescription drugs.
Michael and Carolyn Riley were taken into police custody on February 6, 2007, for Rebecca's death, and charged with first degree murder. The outcome was unknown at the time of this initial posting.

Lawyers for the estate of 4-year-old Rebecca Riley announced that they have settled a medical malpractice lawsuit against the girl’s psychiatrist, Dr. Kayoko Kifuji of Tufts Medical Center, for $2.5 million. In February 2010, a jury convicted Rebecca's mother of second degree murder and, in March, a jury convicted her father of first degree murder.
