Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He served as adjutant of the 2nd Wisconsin cavalry and was tapped to be assistant adjutant general on the staff of Major General Cadwallader C. Washburn. Toward the end of the war, he became assistant adjutant general on the staff of Brigadier General John E. Smith. On April 20, 1865, he received the brevet of brigadier general "for faithful and meritorious services during the war."
