Mary Smith McClain
Birth: Apr. 27, 1902
Death: Apr. 4, 2000

Blues Singer. At the age of thirteen years she left her hometown of Huntingdon, West Virginia and disguised as a boy, joined the circus as an acrobat and singer. The half sister of blues star Bessie Smith, the young runaway used her singing talent to eventually gain appearances in the medicine and minstrel shows that were popular during the 1920's and 1930's. Her popularity on the blues circuit grew and soon "Walking Mary" was found singing at the Apollo Theater, the Cotton Club and other famous clubs as well as touring with the USO. Her unique singing style, infectious personality and demanding stage presence led her to being dubbed the "Queen of the Blues" by night clubs across the country. In the 1940's she removed the diamonds from her bracelet and had them set in her teeth. The sparkly on stage effect of her decorated teeth earned the singer a new nickname, "Diamond Teeth Mary". In 1960 she moved to Florida, got married and began to sing gospel music in area churches. She returned to national prominence in 1980 when she appeared at a folk music festival at the Smithsonian Institution which led to a European tour and an appearance in the play "The Vi-Ton-Ka Medicine Show". After her death in 2000 her request was fulfilled when her ashes were spread on the railroad tracks in West Virginia where, as a teenager, she hopped her first train .  (bio by: Bigwoo)
