Marshall Rinker Jr., who served on the board of directors of the hugely successful West Palm Beach-based building materials company his father founded in 1926, died Monday in Belleair, on Florida's west coast. He was 79.
Born and raised in Palm Beach County, Mr. Rinker went on to become both a personnel director and a board member of Rinker Materials Corp., whose concrete poured into the roads and buildings that mapped Florida's growth. The company eventually became the state's biggest concrete producer.
Mr. Rinker's father, Marshall E. "Doc'' Rinker Sr., built the one-man, one-truck rock- and sand-hauling business into a half-billion-dollar organization before selling it to an Australian conglomerate for $515 million in 1988.
Marshall Rinker Jr. attended Palm Beach County High School and Rollins College before joining the family business. His career with the company spanned more than 30 years.
A passionate tennis player and prolific philanthropist, Mr. Rinker lived in Pinellas County the past 20 years. While living in Palm Beach County, he was a member and deacon of Lakeside Presbyterian Church in West Palm Beach and a Kiwanis Club member.
Mr. Rinker is survived by his wife, Mary; brothers David, of Atlantis, and John, of Palm Beach; eight children and stepchildren; 14 grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Largo.

Mr. Rinker was a native Floridian. Born in Delray in 1926 and raised in West Palm Beach, he attended Palm Beach High School, Graham Eckes Academy and Georgia Military Academy. Mr. Rinker was a graduate of Rollins College, where he was a member of the tennis team and of Lambda Chi Alpha. Tennis was a passion throughout his life. Mr. Rinker's life's career was satisfied through Rinker Materials Corporation. Serving as both personnel director and as a member of the Board of Directors. In West Palm Beach, Mr. Rinker was a member and Deacon of Lakeside Presbyterian Church. Mr. Rinker was a member of the Kiwanis Club of the Palm Beaches. For the past twenty years Mr. Rinker made his home in Pinellas County, Florida. Mr. Rinker was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Largo, where he served on the Administrative Board of Trustees. He served on the Board of Regents at the Duvall Home in Glenwood, Florida. He was a member of the Donald Roebling Society at Morton Plant Hospital. Mr. Rinker was a contributor to many charities that were dear to his heart.
Mr. Rinker is survived by his loving wife Mary. The couple resided in Belleair, Florida. He was preceded in death in 1979 by the passing of his first beloved wife of 27 years, Libby. Survivors besides his wife include eight children and stepchildren, Marsha Rinker Moerings, Palm Beach Gardens; Katherine Rinker Black, Tequesta; Marshall E. Rinker III (Skip), Tequesta; Mitchell Adam Rinker, Glenwood, FL; Nancy Rinker Librizzi, Palm Beach Gardens; Dr. James Harold Morgan, Kansas City, MO; Karen M. Miller, Safety Harbor; and Steven E. Morgan, Cary, NC; 14 grandchildren; and one great-grandson. Two brothers, David Rinker, Atlantis and John Rinker of Palm Beach.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 22, 2006. The Reverends Dr. Tom Farmer and Barbara Brokhoff will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: National Parkinson Foundation, Miami, FL; The Duvall Home, Glenwood, FL; or St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Largo, FL.
