Born and raised in Clinton, Md., he had ties for many years to Bells Methodist church in Camp Springs where he was given a honorary title for his work with Sunday school classes there over the years. He opened a grocery store in 1926 in nearby Meadows, now part of Joint Base Andrews. He was a longtime resident of District Heights, Md. as well. He founded the Nation-Wide Food Stores cooperative in 1934. He was president and it became one of the largest in the region when it merged with District Grocery Stores in 1955. He became general mgr before he retired in 1957. He served overseas in the 29th Infantry of the U.S. Army during World War I. He was active in many social and civic organizations. His 1st wife Hazel died in 1956. He had 2 daughters, 3 sons, 3 sisters, 8 grandchildren, and 1 great-grandaughter
