James Edwin "Jim" was born in Barton to William Henry Chappell and Martha O'Neil Chappell. He was the oldest of 7 children. Two siblings died at birth. His brothers were: William John, Thomas Alvin, Charles Albert, and Harry O'Neil Chappell. James married Evelyn Eva Russell 31 December 1932 in the St. Luther Church in Frostburg, Allegany County, Md. James Edwin Chappell retired from the Celenese Corporation in 1962, where he was a Firemen. Jim was an active member of the Barton Fire Department. He was a Methodist by faith. James "Jim" died in Memorial Hospital, Cumberland, Maryland with his family by his side.
James and Evelyn had 7 children: Martha Lee (Jerry G. Clise); Evelyn Jean (William McElvie); Shirley Ruth (Leon S. Clark); Gilberta Mae (William "Bill" Bradley; James Robert (Marion Steiding Chappell), Betty Ann and Charles Floyd Chappell.
Jim was preceded in death by his wife, daughter's Jean and Martha. He had eighteen grandchildren.
