Mr. Long was born July 4, 1927, at Artussee, the son of Robert Lee and Virdie (Salters) Long. He was a lifelong resident of the Eufaula area, and attended Eufaula High School. He was married to the former Martha Walls on August 2, 1946, at Van Buren, Arkansas. He had served over twenty years in the U.S. Army, U.S. Navy and Merchant Marines, retiring as a Major in the National Guard. He had been in the banking business for thirty-six years, working many years at Farmers& Merchants Bank in Eufaula. He had been an avid collector of arrowheads for several years. He was a member of the Eufaula First Assembly of God Church and was a member of the Muskogee Twirlers for five years, serving a year as President.
He was preceded in death by his father and a sister, Ruth.
