John James Landreth, 84, of Juanita Street, passed away Sunday, Feb. 5, 2011, at Lea Regional Medical Center in Hobbs, N.M. Cremation has already occurred, and at his request no service will be held. A private graveside service will be held at a later date.
John was born Dec. 9, 1926, at the family home near Centrahoma, Okla., to Charles Calloway Landreth and Grace Viola Wallace. He was the youngest of the couple's three children.
At 17, in 1943, he quit high school and joined the Navy. He spent his naval years fighting in the South Pacific, serving on the USS Okanogan. In 1948, John married Betty Drennan in Ada, Okla. He went to college on the GI Bill, earning a bachelor's degree in sociology, history and economics at East Central University in Ada, Okla. Later, John earned a master's degree in educational administration and also in counseling.
After spending seven years in Oklahoma as a teacher and principal, the family moved to Artesia, N.M. John worked as a math teacher at Zia and Park middle schools. In 1966, the family moved to Carlsbad, N.M., where John worked as a counselor at Mid High School. Later he became the Juvenile Liaison Officer for the school district, creating a bridge between the Juvenile Probation Office and the Carlsbad School District. During the last year of his career, John once again worked as a counselor at Mid High (now P.R. Leyva).
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Betty; son, John Michael Landreth and wife, MaryAnn of Durango, Colo.; daughters: Debra Landreth of Jal, N.M., Patrice Landreth of Carlsbad, N.M., and Lea Ann Landreth Bussell and husband, Bruce of Lubbock, Texas; grandson, Nicholas Bussell; granddaughter, Jamie Landreth Galindo and husband, Bert; great-grandsons: Mathew and Nathan Galindo; sisters: Patricia Sutton Marine of Catoosa, Okla., and
Johnola Roe of Rocky Mount, Va.
