Govert Breen was the eldest child of Willem Breen and Maria Hameeteman. He was born in Ouddorp, Zuid Holland, Netherlands on July 14, 1853. He married Johanna van Huizen in Ouddorp on October 26, 1876. Seven children blessed this union: Mary, John Govert, William, Cornelius, Gertrude, Teunis, and Paul. All of the children except Paul were born in the Netherlands.

Govert and his family immigrated to America on 5/28/ 1888. They embarked on their journey at the port of Rotterdam and the vessel was the Leerdam. Johanna, Govert's wife was pregnant with their youngest son Paul when they arrived in America. He was born in December of 1888. The following March, Govert lost his wife and the children, their mother.

Govert married a few years later to Maria Vande Wende. With his new wife, he had two more children: Comer and Jennie.

Govert had a brother named Paul who also immigrated to Michigan and a brother Cornelis who immigrated to Paterson, New Jersey - another Dutch stronghold.

Govert died in Grand Rapids, Michigan on November 21, 1928. He is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in Grand Rapids.
