He married on April 10, 1867, McLean County, Illinois, to Mary Manning.
In the Civil War, John served with the 88th Illinois Volunteer Infantry, 1862-1865.
Their daughter, Myrtle, was born in Nebraska, and was living with them in Seattle, Washington, in 1900.
