John was the 3rd of 10 children of Joseph Yerion and Permelia Clark.
He came with his family from Wythe County, Virginia, to Peoria County, Illinois, about 1847-1848, and is listed at home with his parents there in the 1850 census, age 12 (spelled "Yearning").
He married on April 10, 1867, McLean County, Illinois, to Mary Manning.
In the Civil War, John served with the 88th Illinois Volunteer Infantry, 1862-1865.
Their daughter, Myrtle, was born in Nebraska, and was living with them in Seattle, Washington, in 1900.
