James MItchell was the son of John Mitchell and Eleanor Wilson Mitchell. His father died in 1771, leaving Eleanor with 6 children. On 11 Feb 1762, James Mitchell married Elizabeth Beard in Augusta Co., VA.

I've found multiple birth years from 1740 through 1747, so it is approximate.

His mother Eleanor Mitchell's 200 acres of 1747 are on the J.R. Hildebrand's Beverley Patent map (southwest section )of the original grantees. Eleanor Mitchell was beside John, Thomas and James Tate's lots.

James Mitchell was one of the first Elders at the Old North Mountain Church per History of the Bethel Church, Augusta County, VA, in the 31 Jan 1882 issue of the Staunton Spectator, Vol. 59, #20, written by Matthew Pilson. Plus he was a Trustee of the North Mountain Meeting House, per Lyman Chalkley's Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish Settlement in Virginia...., Vol. 3, p 531 on 17 May 1773. 15 Apr 1777 land William Hays sold to James Mitchell, Chalkley's Vol. 3, p 550.

According to revsites.csv, there was a Daughters of the American Revolution marker placed here for James Mitchell, of Virginia of Lieutenant Tate's Company Virginia Infantry, Private Porterfields Company, Revolutionary War, 1806

According to Jlarc (Joint Legislature Audit and Review Commission of the VA General Assembly): James Mitchell was born in 1740 and died in 1806.
