~My Mom & Dad's Baby~

Sugar was my first dog love but she truly became my parents dog.
Sugar was about 6 weeks old when I got her. She was half Chihuahua and half Toy Fox Terrier. I was only 13 but she was that first "Special" dog. She was special to my parents also and when I left home, I left her with them as they adored her. My dad was a hard sell on a dog. It had to be well behaved as his passion was his yard. A dog that would be destructive would not have lasted at our house. Dad had an ongoing battle with the Gophers in our yard (today they have won). Our neighbor, Bill Martin, gave my dad some Gopher traps never thinking he'd actually catch any. He surprised us all and learned to use them well. He trapped many a Gopher. When he'd run the traps, Sugar would always go with him and be very excited. He'd release the dead varmint and Sugar would carry it around and play with it a while - proudly displaying their kill. When she was grown and too fat, (my brother said she looked like a tiny nail keg with legs) she was still very, very fast. She seemed to sail across the ground. One day, my dad came home from work and was ready to go out to walk his yard as he did every day. Sugar was already outside. She came prancing up to him with something in her mouth. She appeared so excited so he stopped to see it and yep, she dropped a Gopher at his feet. She had dug up, caught, and killed a Gopher! Now Sugar was fast but to catch a gopher that goes underground? It was hard for us all to believe. She took him to the spot where she dug it up. My dad praised her and she carried her "Prize" around for a while. Some dogs are just special and you lose your heart to them. My sweet mother adored this dog also and after losing my dad, she still had Sugar. I was so glad I'd left Sugar at home. When the little dog got older, she got Cancer on her neck which was growing very fast. In a matter of days, my mother had to have her put down before she choked. It was very hard for her as it always is but is the last and most selfless gift we can give our pets. I think Sugar was more my parent's dog than mine. While she always loved me, she adored them and so I consider her their dog and wanted to remember her here.

I hope you have Gophers to catch in Doggie Heaven Sugar....
