OSU Sister Mary Martina Berres, 90, the former Rita Mary Berres, a member of the Ursuline Convent for 70 years, died Sunday, March 4, 2007, at Ursuline Center, 4035 Indian Road, Toledo. Sister Martina entered the Ursuline Community from St. Louis Parish, Custar, OH, February 11, 1937. She professed her final vows August 18, 1942. Sister received her bachelor of arts degree from the former Mary Manse College and a master of arts in education from St. Louis University. Advanced study was done at Bowling Green State University, Western Reserve University, Cornell University and Fontbonne. Sister Martina's teaching career began in 1938 at Rosary Cathedral followed by Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Calvert High School in Tiffin, OH, St. Gerard in Lima, OH and over 30 years at Central Catholic High School, Toledo as a Home Economics teacher. While at Central Catholic in Toledo she initiated a Home Economics course for young men called "Bachelor Living". It was a popular course and she enjoyed working with the young men and was always amazed at their growth in the science of the kitchen. She was on the faculty of the former St. Angela Hall before working in the community's business office. Upon retirement Sister Martina resided at the Ursuline Center on Indian Road. Sister was preceded in death by her parents, Peter and Helen Berres; sisters Evelyn Berres, Ursuline Sister, Sister Helen Marie, a brother, Bernard Berres. She is survived by her sister, Mrs. Dolores Meng of Florida and a nephew, Lawrence Berres, Maumee, and her sisters in the Ursuline Community. Visitation will begin 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 6, 2007 in the Ursuline Center, 4035 Indian Road. The Vigil Service will be at 7:00 p.m. in the Center chapel on Tuesday.. The funeral liturgy will follow on Wednesday, March 7, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. in the Ursuline Center chapel. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery following the funeral liturgy. Arrangements are by Coyle Funeral Home, 1770 S. Reynolds Road. Memorials may be made to the Ursuline Convent of the Sacred Heart Retirement Fund.
