Caswell A. Goodloe
Caswell A. Goodloe was born in Rutherford County, Tenn., August 24, 1838, son of Aquilla Goodloe, who was born in the same county and State as our subject, January 19, 1810, and died in May, 1864, at Union City, Tenn. His wife was Joanna (Hall) Goodloe who was born in Rutherford County in 1818, and died June 2, 1880, also at Union City. The grandparents of our subject were natives of Virginia and of English descent. Caswell A.'s boyhood days were spent on a farm, and at the age of sixteen entered Yorkville Academy and graduated in 1860, at Bluff Springs, Tenn. He immediately began the study of law at Union City, but in 1867 came to Alamo and was principal in the academy there for about three years. He has been a successful lawyer of the county to the present time, and is doing well financially. In the spring of 1861 he joined the Thirteenth Tennessee Infantry, Company D, but after one year's service was discharged on account of ill health. After remaining at home a short time he joined the cavalry service, but owing to continued ill health was again discharged. May 14, 1868, he married Sallie P. Wood, of Dyer County, Tenn., daughter of Stephen D. and Mary Ann Wood. To Mr. And Mrs. Goodloe were born two children: Ilallum W. and Ora M. The mother, who was a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, died September 1, 1880. Our subject is a good and substantial citizen, and is a self-made man. He is a Democrat and Mason and the past R. W. D. G. M. of the Grand Lodge of Tennessee, and has taken all the degrees from an entered apprentice. He is the present Grand Master of the State. He was the first county superintendent of public instruction under the new school law of 1873.
