US Army Brigadier General, Philippine Insurrection Medal of Honor Recipient. He was issued the award on July 24, 1902 for his actions as a captain with the 23rd US Infantry, US Army, on June 13, 1899, near the Zapote River, Luzon, Philippine Islands. The son of a Union cavalry officer, he received an appointment to the US Military Academy at West Point, New York, graduating in 1882 with as commission as a second lieutenant in the 5th Infantry Regiment. During the Spanish-American War and Philippine Insurrection, he served in the Philippines as an aide-de-camp to Brigadier General Samuel Ovenshine. As a lieutenant colonel of the 30th Infantry, he served at Fort William H Seward, Alaska, form 1912 until 1913. He served with the 30th Infantry again on the border in Texas during the Pancho Villa Expedition. In 1915, he was promoted to the rank of colonel and assigned to command the 12th Infantry at Nogales, Arizona, leading American forces in repulsing Villa's harassing attacks against the city. In 1917 he was promoted to the rank of brigadier general and following World War I, he was placed in command of the 2nd Brigade, American Expeditionary Forces, during the post-war demobilization and occupation. He then returned to the US and served at various stateside posts. He died at the age of 63 while en route to Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington DC for medical treatment. His Medal of Honor citation reads: "With nine men volunteered to hold an advanced position and held it against a terrific fire of the enemy estimated at 1,000 strong. Taking a rifle from a wounded man, and cartridges from the belts of others, Capt. Sage himself killed five of the enemy."
